Bill Sherman of Ben Wheeler, TX
Bill has a really interesting twist on the vermiponics bed. It’s a little like vermiponics and a little like a wicking bed. He built a 4 x 8 bed for about $250.
For those who don’t know, vermiponics is a variation on aquaponics.
A very simplistic description of aquaponics is as follows. Aquaponics grows plants in a flooded medium like gravel. Water is pumped through a holding tank with fish. The fish provide the nitrogen for plants to grow.
With vermiponics, our friend the composting worm is used in place of the fish.
And that’s what Bill did. Except his current system is more like a wicking bed in that his plants are grown in soil. The water wicks up from underneath, even though the water is ebb and flow like an aquaponics system. I told you it had a twist!
