Most people have heard of worm tea and the great benefits of it.
Worm tea is made by steeping worm compost in water and aerating it for 24 hours or more. Oxygenating the water solution allows the beneficial bacteria and fungi to grow.
After this steeping period, it’s best to use the tea right away as the bacteria and fungi slowly die off as the solution sits.
Why is Worm Tea so Great?
Worm tea is a completely safe and very effective treatment for fungal problems including:
- brown patch in lawns
- powdery mildew in roses and other plants
- tomato blight
- dampening off of seedlings
Worm tea is also effective on treating insect problems. Applying worm tea to plant leaves will help repel:
- white fly
- aphids
- scale insects
Drenching the soil or your lawn in worm tea gives the soil a microbial boost which increases the health of the soil.
Soil is composed of more than weathered rock. Soil is a living ecosystem. Chemical fertilizers, tilling and other common practices destroy the biosphere of the soil and lead to infertility and erosion.
Adding compost, worm compost, and compost tea to plants and surrounding soil help keep the soil ecosystem healthy and productive.
