What is Premium Worm Food?

in feeding composting worms

I guess I can get away with it because I don’t have tons of worms yet, but I feed my worms only premium worm food?  What is premium worm food?  That is food that will easily decompose in the bin.  Premium worm food is small in size, the smaller the better .  It is also soft and not full of hard to decompose cellulose.

A list (not complete) of premium worm food:

  • potato peels
  • apple peels
  • lettuce
  • tomato
  • banana peels
  • onion
  • tea bags

Less desirable but still usable:

  • coffee grounds (very good but not in large quantity)
  • corn husks
  • dried out rinds and peels

Stuff that I’m sure at some point would compost, but I don’t use:

  • pits such as avocado and peach
  • corn cob
  • corn stalk
  • avocado peel

You get the idea from looking over the lists from premium down, that the more tough and woody the food is, the less desirable.  And, the smaller the pieces, the better.  Hope that helps you decide what to feed your worms.

Any uncomposted food can be screened out when you screen your compost and added back to the bin or thrown out.
