What do worms eat?

Technically, worms eat bacteria and fungi.  They do not eat the food you give them.  Composting worms eat the microorganisms that break down the food you give them.

So, what’s the best food to put in the worm bin?

The same rules that apply to a traditional compost pile apply to worm composting.  Vegetative matter only.  No animal products, fats, oils, bones, or synthetic.

Fats, oils, and animal products most likely would break down at some point, but in the meantime would stink and attract pests.

Foods in a Pinch

Foods to use in a pinch if you’re just starting a bin or run out of kitchen scraps:

  • oatmeal
  • stale bread
  • cornmeal

Add to the bin and spray with water.

Best Foods

These are some of the best worm foods, in my opinion:

  • banana peels
  • apple peels
  • lettuce
  • coffee grounds (sparingly, throw the filter in too)

Note the above foods are soft and small and will start decomposing quickly.  That’s what makes them good worm food.
